It is a common misconception that getting an extension of time to file your tax returns, form 4868, also extends the time that any taxes you owe are also due.

THIS IS FAKE NEWS!

If you don’t pay your taxes due by April 15th, whether you have filed your returns or not, the IRS will assess severe late paying penalties on the balances that are due on that day.

Are you going to need an extension? Remember to call my office so we can calculate the amounts that you may have due on April 15th. We have a seamless process to get your payments remitted on time.

If your tax preparer offers to prepare an extension for you, but doesn’t mention that a payment of any tax due is required, you should fire them and call me immediately. They are putting you at risk for penalties.
