New York City residents will elect a new mayor November 4, 2025.
Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim Socialist, beat Andrew Cuomo in the NYC Democrat mayoral primary.
This memo will be short.
Since Mamdani’s win, I have been inundated with frantic calls from current and new clients who want advice how to escape from New York.
Many people believe that if they keep their large NY residence, and spend 183 days or more out of NY, and have zero NY source income, they will no longer have a NY tax obligation.
Technically, and per the NY tax code, this is true.
But if you don’t sell your NY residence, I have seen NY still considering taxpayers as NY residents on their worldwide income.
